From getting started as a fish farmer to bringing your finished product to market, the Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection has resources to assist the Wisconsin's aquaculturists with each step of the process.

Registration
Fish farms in Wisconsin need to be registered with the Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection, and registration must be renewed annually. Owners of recreational ponds may also want to register.

Processing Fish for Food
If you process fish or seafood as human food, your processing facility must be licensed as well as comply with minimum construction and sanitary standards.

Importing Fish
Importing fish or fish eggs into Wisconsin may require proof of health and other documentation.

Using Pesticides
Rotenone is a common ingredient in aquatic-use pesticides. Find out how to be trained and certified to use it and other aquatic-use pesticides.

Environmental Permits
Along with registration, fish farms may need one or more permits from the Department of Natural Resources and other agencies.
