Bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) has never been found in the United States, or in native-born animals anywhere outside of Europe and the United Kingdom. One infected animal was found in Canada, one in the Falkland Islands and two in Oman; however, these were all animals that had been brought to these nations from the United Kingdom.

According to the Office International des Epizooties, this is the number and location of BSE-infected animals found as of December 26, 2003:
