Animals, the law, and you?
These cows are contented, it's plain to see. But it's not always so cut-and-dried. Can you tell when an animal is in good condition? Do you know what can be done legally when it's not -- and someone's at fault? Do you have what it takes to be a humane officer?
No, not one of those cops who kicks down doors with guns at the ready -- the kind you see on Animal Planet. Wisconsin humane officers work under the auspices of a local government, with local law enforcement, to investigate cases of animal neglect and abuse. They put together the cases that district attorneys can take to court.
We're offering our annual 40-hour training course for humane officers Oct. 4-8, and asking for registration by Sept. 10. If there's space left after that deadline, we may accept more students.
